Heat Wave Bakes Parts Of The Midwest And Northeast With Extreme Temperatures

'Extreme, dangerous' heat to continue this week, meteorologists say

The National Weather Service has a Heat Advisory posted until 8 p.m. for "real feel' temperatures of 98-to-104 over much of the region excluding Cape Cod and the Islands". The heat index plot below, which shows the average hours per year under each temperature zone starting at 80, helps highlight that a day like this is about as hot as we typically get in a summer. Some of the storms may be a little strong, with locally heavy rains.

Weekend Outlook: More typical afternoon scattered storms are expected on Saturday with highs in the lower 90s.

A cold front is approaching from the northwest, firing up a few thunderstorms as it inches closer. While it is weakening considerably as it moves towards us, we still run the risk for afternoon and evening showers and t'storms.

"The biggest heat will be away from the ocean, in the low 90s, maybe the mid-90s up around Lawrence and Lowell", Simpson said.

Most of ME is heading into a stretch of heat and humidity that won't subside until Friday at the earliest, the National Weather Service in Gray said Sunday.

The ridge of heat will gradually shift east by the second half of the week, which enable storm chances to increase slightly over the area. Los Angeles is expected to reach 101 degrees on Friday while Las Vegas is forecast to reach 112 degrees.

July has finally arrived, and boy is it coming in hot! We can still expect high temperatures to top out in the low 90s Thursday and Friday with high humidity.

In Chicago, where heat indexes were forecast to hit as high as 110 degrees, city workers on Saturday had to hose down a bridge because the extreme heat could cause the steel to expand. The Excessive Heat Warning will continue for Chicago itself, where the cumulative-effects of the oppressive heat will last longer and be greater. Canadian high pressure and a dip in the jet stream should then build in for the remainder of next weekend, bringing a return to more tolerable high temperatures in the upper 80s and lowering humidity values.
