An Indianapolis church locked up Mary, Joseph, and Jesus behind a fence Tuesday as part of its Every Family is Holy campaign, The Indy Channel has reported. A report on Washington DC quoted Rev. Stephen Carlsen, the church's dean and rector, "The news prompted the church to create a display showing a detained holy family".

"The statement with the Holy Family says as much about our policy as any statement would say", the Rev. Canon Lee Curtis of Christ Church Cathedral, who came up with the idea, told NBC News.

The ABC affiliate notes that the campaign is meant to bring awareness to and rebuke Trump's "zero tolerance" policy at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Fred Andrews, a sexton at Christ Church Cathedral, said that he hoped the demonstration would bring people to the polls in the next election.

In addition to the display, the church placed a banner on their grounds that reads #EveryFamilyisHoly and the equivalent in Spanish, #CadaFamiliaEsSagrada. The administration claimed it was simply following the law, despite the fact there is no law in place that requires families to be separated at the border.

"I know what the Bible said", Carlsen said.

"According to the Golden Rule, we're supposed to love our neighbors as we love ourselves", he said. As to the rest, says Carlsen, "If it offends people, I think it might be God trying to get their attention". Curtis also noted that the biblical refugee family was seeking asylum in Egypt shortly after Jesus's birth.

Since then, President Donald Trump signed an executive order saying families can be detained together, instead of separately.

Carlsen said he has spent some time standing on the sidewalk in front of the church to talk to people about the display. "How long are we going to keep detaining families indefinitely?" he said.
