Powerful Republican Pulled Into Ohio State Molestation Scandal

U.S. Capitol Police are reviewing what were described as odd emails sent to Republican Rep. Jim Jordan from a former college wrestler who claimed the lawmaker ignored sexual abuse against students when he coached at Ohio State University more than two decades ago. I've talked to other coaches, and they didn't know of any abuse. "I believe him 100 percent", Trump told reporters Thursday aboard Air Force One.

"Congressman Jordan never saw any abuse, never heard about any abuse, and never had any abuse reported to him during his time as a coach at Ohio State", Ian Fury, a spokesperson for Jordan, told Fox News earlier this week.

"No question in my mind", Trump added.

"I considered Jim Jordan a friend", Mike DiSabato, a former wrestler who said he was abused by Strauss, told NBC.

Besides showing Hellickson being interviewed, the video shows DiSabato and two other former OSU students saying Strauss sexually abused them.

Jordan was among the people Yetts told about groping the first time in happened in 1992, Yetts told The Associated Press Tuesday.

ABC News has not seen the emails.

A former wrestler was on CNN on Wednesday and said Jordan witnessed inappropriate behavior by Strauss in the team showers.

"I don't know why he would, unless it's a cover-up", Yetts said.

Jordan, a former collegiate wrestling star, was an Ohio State assistant wrestling coach from 1986 to 1994. Strauss died in 2005, and it was ruled a suicide.

Former Ohio State wrestler Mike DiSabato was one of three ex-OSU wrestlers who confirmed Jordan's knowingness to NBC News.

Jordan has denied that he knew about allegations of abuse by Strauss, who joined Ohio State's clinical faculty in 1978 and served as a team physician in the athletics department from 1981 to 1995 before retiring in 1998.

Rep. Jim Jordan arrives for the House Republicans' caucus meeting in the Capitol on immigration reforms, June 7, 2018. He said that Mr. Jordan asked him not to get him involved.

DiSabato has accused Jordan of failing to report allegations of alleged abuse of athletes by Dr. Richard Strauss, who worked as the team doctor from the mid-1970s to late 1990s.

Their statements came after Jordan told The Columbus Dispatch this spring that he "had not heard about any type of abuse at all". He was one of the founders of the House Freedom Caucus, which is basically made up of the Tea Party members and he has been the biggest mouthpiece attacking Special Prosecutor Robert Muller, going after Peter Struck, the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who was having an affair with another Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and they sent a couple text messages to one another. He's up for re-election this November.

DiSabato said the objective of the video was to provide university officials with firsthand accounts of the alleged abuse, and not just the versions of victims' testimonies that would be relayed by investigators with Perkins Coie, the law firm.

The university has urged anyone with relevant information to contact the law firm Perkins Coie, which is conducting an independent investigation.
