US wants North Korea denuclearized in a year, but concerns remain

US National Security Adviser Bolton has said the weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles could be dismantled in 12 months

National Security Advisor John Bolton said in an interview Sunday that he believes denuclearization is possible within one year if Pyongyang agrees to the process soon.

"We're well aware of what the North Koreans have done in the past".

Bolton also said on "Face the Nation" that during the US-North Korea summit in Singapore, Kim was "very emphatic several times" about turning over the arsenal, which was a change from previous regimes.

Less than three weeks ago, Mr Pompeo said the United States wanted North Korea to take "major" nuclear disarmament steps within the next two years - before the end of Mr Trump's first term in January 2021.

Trump tweets Tuesday that "All of Asia is thrilled" that North Korea has halted missile testing and only the "Opposition Party" Democrats, including the "Fake News" is complaining.

"Many good conversations with North Korea-it is going well!"

"Ambassador Kim had a meeting just yesterday with members of the North Korean delegation, and Secretary Pompeo will be headed to North Korea later this week", she said.

The White House has declined to comment on the prospect, maintaining that the U.S.is continuing to make progress with the nation.

Kim also led the USA team hammering out the joint declaration that Trump and Kim Jong Un signed in Singapore, and it's expected his team is working now to negotiate how it is implemented.

Pompeo speaks with Russian FM on Trump-Putin meeting
Trump's priority is to protect Americans and American interests, including those of USA allies, he said. "We look into the future with optimism and are ready for cooperation on all fronts", he said .

He would spend the next two days in Tokyo where he will meet Japanese and South Korean leaders to discuss their shared commitment to the final, fully verified denuclearisation of North Korea, as well as other bilateral and regional issues, state department spokesperson Heather Nauert said.

13 Jun the us President said that the nuclear threat from North Korea no longer exists.

Appearing on a different Sunday talk show on CBS News, his National Security Advisor John Bolton said that the United States has developed a programme to dismantle North Korea's nuclear weapons.

Secretary of state Mike Pompeo is due to meet Kim in early July.

However, some experts disputed Bolton's optimistic time frame for decommissioning North Korea's weapons, even if North Korea were willing to agree to such moves, amid multiple reports suggesting otherwise.

The North Korean government appears to be finalizing the expansion of a major ballistic missile manufacturing plant, a monitoring group tells CBN News.

Pressure will now be on Pompeo to make progress in negotiations with North Korea to turn the summit declaration into concrete action. Such missiles are more concerning to USA military planners because they can be kept hidden while fueled, making them easier to deploy and harder to target during any attack.

Analysts were and are skeptical, given North Korea's history of backtracking on previous denuclearization pledges.

A senior USA intelligence official also said last week that Pyongyang was continuing to "deceive us on the number of facilities, the number of weapons, the number of missiles".
