Armed, barricaded suspect may be former NBA, UCLA basketball star: report

Authorities said a man fired at police and barricaded himself in a Sherman Oaks Calif. home on Friday

At about 5 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to a call about a man with a gun at Honeycutt's Sherman Oaks address.

The Los Angeles Police Department stated that an unnamed man died after an apparent "self-inflicted gunshot", following a shoot-out with police. On Saturday morning, Honeycutt's mother told Escoto her son had killed himself, Escoto told the LA Times. They made contact with the suspect, a male in his 20's, and as they were communicating with the suspect an OIS occurred.

He allegedly began shooting at responding officers, who returned fire.

Crisis negotiators and the SWAT team were deployed to the scene and several residences were evacuated in the area as a precaution, according to ESPN. Honeycutt played at UCLA during the 2009-11 seasons and was drafted 35th overall by the Kings in 2011 draft.

Officers were communicating with the person in the house, when he fired a gun from inside the residence, Officer Tony Im, an LAPD spokesman, said in a report by the Los Angeles Times. The rep said the death "appears to be a self-inflicted injury by gunshot".
