Former Thai Navy Seal dies trying to rescue boys trapped in cave

Flooding cut off their escape and prevented rescuers from finding them for nearly 10 days.

He said the first rescued person is expected to be brought out of the cave by 9pm. At this time though, diving is the only possible method of escape, even though cave rescue experts warn it is extremely unsafe even for those with experience.

Their plight has transfixed Thailand and the rest of the world, as authorities have struggled to devise a plan to extract the boys and their coach through twisting, narrow and jagged passageways that in some places are completely flooded.

On Saturday, rescue mission chief Narongsak said conditions were "perfect" to evacuate the team in the coming days before fresh rains and a possible rise in carbon dioxide further imperil the group. "They don't know the Thai people". If weather forecasts are correct, access to the cave could soon close again due to flooding from seasonal monsoon rains.

"We're still at war with water and time", he told reporters.

Addressing media earlier today, Chaing Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn said that all those trapped in the cave are now aware of efforts to rescue them and "they're ready to go out".

Each diver reportedly needs to carry three heavy oxygen tanks to the boys' cave but the path is treacherous, winding, and long, taking skilled divers around five hours each way. "Finding the boys doesn't mean we've finished our mission".

NBC News reported food supplies for the youth soccer team accompanied by one adult include mostly high-calorie gels, so some boys letters showed a desire for tastier food in their letters home. His death underscores the difficulty of training boys who have not learned to swim and have no experience with diving equipment to make a six-hour trip through conditions that challenge very experienced divers. Tell my brother to be ready to bring me fried chicken.

I sincerely hope that they will be able to join us at the final, which will undoubtedly be a wonderful moment of communion and celebration.

The 25 year old coach also promised to take care of the kids and also stated that he wanted to apologise to the parents.

"To the parents of all the kids, right now the kids are all fine".

"Thank you all for the support", the coach wrote.

In their letters, posted on the local government's Facebook page, several parents make clear that they do not blame the coach. The 13 are having health evaluations and rehabilitation, and are being taught diving skills.

Oxygen levels in the cave in Chiang Rai have dropped during the rescue effort, which rescuers have become concerned about.

"This mission is really scary and risky", Pasakorn Boonyalak, deputy governor of Chiang Rai province, said at the press conference.

A former Thai Navy SEAL passed out making the dive on Friday and died.

Other messages written on pages from a notebook saw the boys send messages of reassurance to their anxious relatives.
