Pompeo seeks clarity in denuclearization talks with NKorea

Mike Pompeo meets with Kim Yong Chol for a second day of talks at the Park Hwa Guest House in Pyongyang North Korea

Pompeo downplayed North Korea's statement after the talks in which the country's foreign ministry bashed hopes for a quick deal and accused the USA of making "gangster-like" demands aimed at forcing it to abandon nuclear weapons.

"The high-level talks this time brought us in a risky situation where we may be shaken in our unshakable will for denuclearisation, rather than consolidating trust between the DPRK and the United States".

The task of establishing the disarmament programme now falls to Pompeo, who is seeking a formal declaration by the North of the size of its nuclear programme as well as an eventual timetable for it to be ended under worldwide verification and inspection.

Yet Pompeo himself had earlier said he envisioned that occurring in about two 1/2 years, by the end of Trump's term. Trump in turn offered security guarantees to Pyongyang and pledged a halt to large-scale military drills with South Korea.

The president previously and repeatedly referred to Kim as "Little Rocket Man" in regards to North Korea's nuclear weapons program and ballistic missile tests.

"There is perhaps a two-to-three-month window over the summer to do so before Washington will need to return the focus back to maximum pressure", Cronin said, referring to a USA -led drive to press North Korea to give up its arms programmes through tough worldwide sanctions, from which Pyongyang has been seeking relief.

But Pompeo had said that his conversations with senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol were "productive" and that he had made progress "on nearly all of the central issues".

The Secretary told reporters that they made progress in every element of their discussion, . but did not elaborate on whether a timeline has been set for North Korea's "complete denuclearization". "Some places, a great deal of progress; other places there's still more work to be done". "In other words, after US troops are withdrawn and U.S".

"When we spoke to them about denuclearisation, they did not push back", Mr Pompeo told a news conference. Pompeo didn't seem all too pleased with Kim's forwardness, however.

Trump insists he will be ‘prepared’ for Putin meeting
Trump told reporters last week he would press Putin on election meddling and also discuss Syria and Ukraine during their meeting. The summint in Helsinki will be the first full-fledged meeting of the two leaders since Trump's taking office in January 2017.

And he said progress had been made towards agreeing "the modalities" of North Korea's destruction of a missile facility.

On North Korea talks just concluded, Pompeo said: "We raised a full range of issues with them, all the issues that are important to both the United States and Japan".

Nauert said the July 12 meeting, along the border between North and South Korea, would be at a working level and involve US Defense Department officials.

Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, dictator Kim Jong Un's top adviser and North Korea's former spy chief, exchanged pleasantries before the second meeting between the two countries.

Kim Jong-un studied at a junior high school in Bern.

Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said on Twitter there was a danger military action could be called for because Trump might now claim he had tried diplomacy but was betrayed by Kim.

"Sanctions will remain in place until final, fully verified denuclearisation as agreed to by Chairman Kim (Jong Un) occurs", Pompeo said, adding that the USA would seek to smooth the path by providing security guarantees requested by Pyongyang.

Mike Pompeo and Kim Yong-chol say goodbye as the USA envoy departs for Japan.

While Pompeo hailed progress at the latest talks, the KCNA commentary and the results he announced on Saturday will only add to unease that North Korea's commitment to denuclearisation is a facade, and it has no intention of giving up its weapons.
