Scott Pruitt resigns as chief of United States Environmental Protection Agency
09 July 2018, 09:01 | Ross Houston
Scott Pruitt resigns from EPA
In his tweet this afternoon, the president said, I have no doubt that Andy Wheeler will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda.
"With Scott Pruitt in charge, we can finally unravel the mess of the EPA, and begin developing and implementing thoughtful policies that will make measurable improvements to our natural resources and unleash an energy revolution that will bring jobs and higher wages to Americans".
And environmentalists have seized on Wheeler's record as a former energy lobbyist and coal lover to herald the acting administrator as the environment's biggest enemy.
Wheeler went on to stress that the EPA under his tenure would act only under the terms of its congressional directive, and would not seek to expand its boundaries as he says the agency did under the Obama administration.
He also oversaw large raises to favorite aides, reportedly against the express wishes of the White House. Mr. Pruitt was very qualified and worked diligently to protect our environment, while concomitantly providing regulatory certainty for our Nation's economy. "He is, without question, a member of the coal industry's Hall of Fame", said Sen.
Scott Pruitt, the embattled Environmental Protection Agency administrator, reportedly wanted Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired so he could take the top Department of Justice job himself.
In an email sent out to EPA staffers Thursday night and obtained by the Associated Press, Wheeler said he was honoured to take temporary leadership of the agency where he started his Washington career in the early 1990s, as an EPA employee dealing with toxic substances and other matters.
Last month, while praising Pruitt's "fantastic job" at the EPA, the president admitted, "I'm not happy about certain things, I'll be honest".
Inhofe, who dismisses global warming as a hoax and famously tossed a snowball on the Senate floor to prove his point, hailed Wheeler's ascension to EPA chief. "I have thought for years environmental issues need to be depoliticized".
Murray Energy's CEO, Robert Murray, has been a loyal supporter of Trump. Wheeler said Trump "hasn't been that successful" in his business endeavors and had "more baggage then all of the other Republican candidates combined". All three face tough re-elections in states Trump won easily last fall. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.
"He was clearly unfit for the position of public trust that he was in as administrator of the EPA", said Spaulding.
Senator Kamala Harris, Democrat from California:"Just because Scott Pruittresigned doesn't mean we've forgotten about the taxpayer funds he's misused or the damage he's done to our environment".
Warren also slammed Andrew Wheeler, Pruitt's deputy who will now serve as acting administrator, saying he is "a longtime Washington insider and corporate lawyer who's done the bidding of fossil fuel companies for decades".
