Golf Magazine reports the two, once enemies and now friends, almost played the "giggle golf" game on July 3, but negotiations for the match (and its accompanying prime-time special), couldn't be completed in that time.
Plans to stage the made-for-television event on July 3 in Las Vegas fell through, according to the report, but representatives for 14-time major champion Woods and five-time major victor Mickelson remain committed to making it happen.
The two best-golfing legends of our generation could hit the course to play a mano a mano winner-take-all match.
"We're working on a different date", Mickelson told Golf.com. Apparently this was close enough to happening on July 3rd that Mickelson thought it was a done deal, but it fell through.
According to a report from Golf.com, Mickelson floated the idea of playing a "high-stakes, winner-take-all match" to Woods when they were paired together at the Players Championship. During a practice round, an idea sparked between rivals-turned-friends Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson; rather than continue playing exclusively in tournaments, why not play head-to-head in a victor take all match?
"It's a ridiculous amount of money", Mickelson told Golf.com.
Quite frankly, this match would have been a much bigger draw and far more fascinating about 10 to 12 years ago when both players were at the top of their game and couldn't stand each other.
The news that Mickelson and Woods are planning an 18-hole match means that comments made by both players at The Players in May were actually teasers. "We'll play for whatever makes him uncomfortable".
The duo have been rivals for much of their careers, with Mickelson a long-time number two to Woods' domination as world No. 1. The pair reportedly are trying to arrange a $10 million winner-take-all match. Mickelson has said according to Golf.
This would be must-see TV for any golf fan.
Mickelson was part of the last of the series of matches in 2005 when he and Retief Goosen beat Woods and John Daly at The Bridges in California. "How many times have we both won on Tour?"
