Tropical Storm Chris forms off the Carolinas, generating unsafe surf

The tropical storm, now building near the Carolinas, is expected to strengthen into a hurricane Monday and will most likely remain offshore for two to three days, forecasters said.

The Carolinas could see their first hurricane of the season on Monday, as Tropical Storm Chris strengthens. As of Sunday evening, Chris was about 180 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, with maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph.

Tropical Storm Chris continues to spin just off the North Carolina coast and is now centered roughly 150 miles to the south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

The NHC forecasts the storm to meander off the coast for the next several days.

Any of these passing showers or storms will be capable of producing periods of heavy downpours, rumbles of thunder and lightning and gusty winds up to 30-40 miles per hour.

The storm was expected to strengthen to a hurricane by about 8 a.m. on Monday. "Therefore, a small craft warning is also in effect", the DDM said.

Tropical Storm Beryl, downgraded from a category one hurricane, remains on a slow course towards the Lesser Antilles.

Interests in the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic areencouraged to monitor the remnants of Beryl.

'Additional weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, especially once Beryl reaches the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday, ' the NHC said. They predict Beryl will continue to weaken over the next 24 hours, but said the storm may develop into a tropical cyclone in a few days as it moves across the Bahamas and the western Atlantic.

As some East Coast residents gear up for Tropical Storm Chris, New Englanders can rest easy knowing the storm will avoid the area, forecasters said.

Rain accumulations of 2 to 3 inches are expected through Tuesday "across the Leeward and the Virgin Islands, as well as Puerto Rico".
