'Tiny Beryl' becomes first hurricane of the season
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says, however that a tropical storm watch remains in effect for Dominica. It was located 1,140 miles (1,830 kilometers) east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles on Friday morning.
At noon, Tropical Storm Chris was 160 miles south of Cape Hatteras with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.
"Beryl is expected to still be a hurricane when it reaches the Lesser Antilles late Sunday or Monday". Puerto Rico could see minimal tropical-storm winds, saidCNN meteorologist Taylor Ward, but it is hard to predict Beryl's track beyond the 48-hour period.
According to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center, this system has the potential to become the second hurricane of the season thanks to warmer than average water temperatures in the North Atlantic right now. Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September, remained under a state of emergency.
A hurricane watch has been issued for Dominica while four French Caribbean territories are under tropical storm watch, as an unpredictable Hurricane Beryl continues on a path towards the Lesser Antilles.

"If #Chris becomes a hurricane as forecast, it will be the second hurricane in July", Brian McNoldy, Capital Weather Gang's tropical weather expert, noted on Twitter. Beryl is expected to gradually weaken over the Caribbean early next week and may no longer be an organized tropical cyclone once it reaches Hispaniola.
Hurricane Beryl is churning in the Atlantic on Saturday morning and taking aim at the small islands that make up the eastern Caribbean.
Beryl is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 2 to 4 inches through Monday across the southern Leeward and northern Windward Islands.
Meanwhile, a tropical disturbance is being monitored closer to the USA where it is located between the southeast coast of the country and Bermuda.
The storm is forecast to meander off the coast for the next several days before moving away from the United States.
