Ant-Man and the Wasp lands another success for Marvel

Marvel AIM MCU

It's another Disney-led weekend as Ant-Man and the Wasp claims the weekend's #1 spot. Ant-Man and the Wasp had a worldwide opening of $161 million, including $85 million internationally this weekend.

The flick opened Thursday with $11.5 million - almost double that of the first movie - but its Friday, Saturday and Sunday numbers didn't hold as high, which basically means a lot of the hard core fans went to see it Thursday night. While under normal circumstances this number would be considered a win since it's up $18.8 million from the first Ant-Man's opening ($57.2 million), it is still below industry expectations for the first Marvel Studios film after the record-breaking Avengers: Infinity War.

I haven't seen it myself, TBH, and I haven't heard anything about it from my "non-geeky" friends (i.e. nothing on my personal social media); so I think everybody has been outside enjoying the sunshine and involved with other activities.

Ant-Man and the Wasp had a reported budget of $150 million and marketing costs are believed to be around $100 million, The movie needs about $500 million to cover expenses with everything above that being a bonus.

Ant-Man and the Wasp squashed the competition at the North American box office. "We think we're going to be great counter-programming for the rest of the summer". The most recent iteration was 2016's The Purge: Election Year, which ended its theatrical run with US$79 million domestically and US$118.5 million worldwide. This makes Incredibles 2 the first animated movie to ever top $500 million, which, of course, makes it the highest grossing animated title ever. So far, Solo has made $380 million at the worldwide box office.

Now in its fourth frame, Disney-Pixar's "Incredibles 2" just hit a major milestone of its own. Finally, Deadpool 2 took the 10th spot this weekend with an additional $1.6 million, bringing the grand total to $727.7 million globally.

Coming in third is Universal and Amblin's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which brought in an estimated $28.5 million for the three-day weekend and has now pushed its domestic cume to $333.3 million as it begins its third week in release. The documentary focusing on the life and career of Whitney Houston holds an A CinemaScore and a Rotten Tomatoes average of 90 percent. Sorry to Bother You also opened this weekend and earned over $717 thousand, giving it the 16th spot.

Elsewhere, Focus Features' Won't You Be My Neighbour landed in the top 10 at the domestic box office again, drawing another US$2.6 million when it expanded to 893 locations. We will provide an update to the intentional and worldwide box office totals once they are made available.
