U.S. President Donald Trump (R) speaks beside NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the start of the NATO summit at their new headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, May 25, 2017.

As we approach the July 16 meeting, the European Council's President, Donald Tusk, has sent a clear message to the United States. "I think we'll see more and more countries developing relationships that they think will benefit them in an era when they can't count on the United States the way they used to", said Goldgeier.

Ahead of his first formal visit to Britain as US President, Mr Trump delivered a damning indictment of Mrs May's government saying it was in "turmoil" and Russian President Vladimir Putin may be less of a problem. "And we've been encouraging Ukraine at every level, at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and in the United States, to reform its government to give the power to the people to have a rule of law".

Trump also stoked domestic controversy by refusing to say if he saw Putin as a friend or a foe.

"I think that getting along with Russian Federation, getting along with China, getting along with others, is a good thing, not a bad thing", the president added.

"I really can't say right now".

On Nato, President Trump's main objection is that a number of member states have not increased their defence budgets to the target of 2% of economic output.

UK's Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned
Now some Conservatives who are pushing for a hard Brexit threaten that the prime minister could soon face a no-confidence vote. The staunchly pro-Brexit Conservative lawmaker Andrea Jenkyns tweeted: "Fantastic news".

While Mr Trump is looking to improve relations with Russian Federation, there has been alarm at the deteriorating climate with his allies in Europe and what he might agree to with President Putin.

After Putin told Trump that White House advisers were trying to interfere, Trump reportedly called those advisers "stupid people", and told Putin he "shouldn't listen to them". "And dear Europe, spend more on your defense because everyone expects an ally that is well prepared and equipped", he added, noting: "Money is important, but genuine solidarity should be more important".

"I believe that [the European NATO members] are stepping up. The U.S.is spending many times more than any other country in order to protect them", Trump wrote.

Trump left that meeting without signing the joint statement from the seven nations and antagonizing important USA allies, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. "I don't know how much protection we get from protecting you".

"On top of this the European Union has a Trade Surplus of $151 Million with the USA, with big Trade Barriers on US goods".

The US President has declined to offer support to the embattled Prime Minister after five MPs, including leading Brexiteers Johnson and David Davis, quit their roles in protest of her plan for leaving the EU.
