Feds say they will release, reunite 50 immigrant children

The hearing only covered the roughly 100 children under the age of 5 who were separated from their parents under the administration's "zero tolerance" border prosecution policy. "And then we'll have a very clear understanding as to who has not been reunited, why not and what time frame will be in place".

"It is disgraceful that the Trump administration had no plan to reunite children after tearing them away from their parents, and it is even more disgraceful that they are now trying to delay the court-ordered deadline for doing so", Cummings wrote on Twitter.

So far, the court has yet to change the reunification deadlines, which are set for July 10 for children under 5 and July 26 as the deadline for all children separated from their parents.

"I believe they can reunite some individuals tomorrow, but a major obstacle is their insistence on using the long verification process that was designed for unaccompanied minors", he said, citing the controversial DNA testing and criminal background checks the government is going through prior to returning the young children to their parents. One child's status is unknown because the government lacks information about the parent, Fabian said.

Sabraw asked ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt for his take on whether the administration is "in full compliance to the extent it can be" with the court's deadline.

Attorneys for the children and the Department of Justice are working with the court to reunite the remaining children - many of their parents have been deported or released from custody in the United States - as quickly as possible.

Only two children have been reunited with their parents since the government provided a list over the weekend of 102 kids under 5 in custody after being taken from their parents.

Children separated from their parents, some as young as 1 year old, are appearing in USA immigration court. Pacific Time on Tuesday to hear the Trump administration's final list of "groups of parents that will fall into category where it is impossible to reunite by tomorrow".

US District Judge Dana Sabraw ordered both sides back in court on Tuesday to give another update and for him rule on differences over protocols to follow when reuniting children.

Fabian told the judge that once parents and children were reunited, they would likely be released from immigration custody.

"The systems that are in place are absolutely not equipped to deal with this", Emily Kephart of the nonprofit Kids in Need of Defense told NPR's Nurith Aizenman last month.

So far, two children under 5 years old have been returned to their families.

Additionally, Gelernt took issue with the Trump administration's claim that it has lost track both of parents who have been released by ICE within the USA pending their immigration or asylum hearings and at least nine parents who it deported without their children.

Gelernt said the ACLU was concerned that parents would be put on the street without any money in an unfamiliar city.

Six of the 102 children are not eligible for reunification because they have a parent with a criminal history or were separated from someone who is not their parent.

"The children will be brought to an ICE location where the parents are". The families will be released after they are reunited.

One child has not been matched with a parent, Fabian said.

And how old is that child?

At a court hearing, Justice Department lawyer Sarah Fabian acknowledged the Trump administration won't meet the deadline for all the youngsters.
