Hurricane Chris strengthens as it moves away from U.S.

Beryl the last white mass of clouds slightly up and right of center passing into the Caribbean early Monday morning

Tropical Storm Chris was upgraded to hurricane status Tuesday after it increased in speed and strength as forecasters warned that it would bring risky rip currents to the Jersey Shore this week.

The national weather forecaster says the storm is now off the coast of Carolina and is expected to begin moving northeast later today.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Chris became Hurricane Chris with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, the hurricane center said in its 5 p.m. advisory.

With winds of 85mph, the storm is between North Carolina and Bermuda. Eye formation is typically an indication of winds reaching the minimum hurricane threshold at 74 miles per hour.

Hurricane Chris is expected to pass south of Nova Scotia on Thursday, creating high waves along the Atlantic coast.

The Met Office are warning of the chance of some showers on Wednesday afternoon on what is set to be a cloudy day for long periods, with the outlook for Friday including the chance of thunderstorms.

It also issued a flash-flood watch for the U.S. Virgin Islands through Monday evening. Toward the weekend, it may hit Newfoundland as a tropical storm.

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello said the territory had opened more than 40 evacuation shelters for those in need.
