The Egyptian Misdemeanor court has sentenced Lebanese tourist Mona al-Mazbouh on Saturday to eight years in prison for posting a Facebook video defaming Egypt, as stated by her lawyer on Reuters.

He also said that he hopes that the Egyptian authorities would look beyond his daughter's mistake given her young age and naivety.

The 24-year-old was charged with "deliberately broadcasting false rumours which aim to undermine society and attack religions".

Authority took action after she posted a 10-minute video online in which she used swear words to describe her vacation in Egyptian capital Cairo, where she claims she was sexually harassed.

During her tirade, Mazbouh called Egypt a lowly, dirty country and Egyptian men pimps and women prostitutes.

The allegations drew a strong reaction online, with some Egyptians calling for Ms Mazbouh's arrest and lodging a complaint against her.

Before attempting to leave Cairo last month, the woman posted a follow up video in which she apologized, saying she "definitely didn't mean to offend all Egyptians".

She was arrested in May before departing from Cairo Airport.

The court's verdict is not final and will be appealed on 29 July.

Emad Kamal, Mazbouh's lawyer, has expressed that "with all due respect to the judiciary, this is a severe ruling".

The court reduced the penalty from 11 to 8 years in prison, further imposing a fine of EGP 10,700.

Mona's lawyer Imad Kamal said that ten years ago she underwent brain surgery, then it's hard for her to cope with anger. She said she faced verbal harassment, launching a scathing attack at the bank's employees, which then prompted the bank to file a lawsuit against her.

In June, Egypt's parliament approved a bill placing social media accounts, blogs and websites with more than 5,000 followers under the supervision of the country's top media regulatory body.
