Liverpool transfer news: Liverpool begin talks with Stoke City over Xehrdan Shaqiri transfer

Xherdan Shaqiri of Switzerland in action during of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Round of 16 match between Sweden and Switzerland

Shaqiri's involvement at the World Cup ended last week when Switzerland were knocked out of the tournament by Sweden.

Now, Pearce writes that talks have been opened with Stoke as Liverpool look to capitalise on the Potters being relegated last season.

Stoke are resigned to losing the Switzerland worldwide, who understandably wants to stay in the Premier League after last season's relegation into the Championship.

The relegation ensured that a new release clause was triggered in Shaqiri's contract, with the 26-year-old now allowed to depart the club for a modest fee of £13 million - a true bargain in today's market.

UK woman dies after being exposed to nerve agent novichok
Russian state television reports on July 9 nonetheless continued to cast doubt on the British investigations into the poisonings. They are not showing any signs of having been exposed to the nerve agent, and are being screened as a precaution.

Shaqiri has spoken publicly of his desire to remain in England , and talks between Liverpool, Stoke and the player's representatives are underway.

Liverpool have already bolstered their midfield options this summer with Naby Keita and Fabinho, for £52.75m from Red Bull Leipzig and £43.7m from Monaco respectively, and had lined up a £53m move for Nabil Fekir until a medical raised concerns.

Klopp's side reached the Champions League final last season but finished a distant 25 points behind record breaking champions Manchester City.

Liverpool may be able to sweeten any deal by offering a player on loan. Liverpool then fly to America for a three-game tour, where they will play Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United in the International Champions Cup. Fekir is now part of the French squad which have made it to the World Cup final.
