More than 200 people ill from parasite in Del Monte vegetable trays

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported there were 212 cases of the infection, cyclosporiasis, in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. On June 15 Del Monte recalled 28-ounce trays.

Will the Del Monte Cyclospora outbreak that has sickened at least 212 people, mostly in Minnesota and Wisconsin this summer, continue to grow? As per a statement issued by the Food and Drug Administration, two cases reported in MI had bought the tray in Wisconsin and so, MI as such does not have an impact from this cyclosporiasis outbreak. Other symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue, as well as possible vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms.

IN and IL, along with the another four states, have also been warned about the outbreak, since some of the Del Monte products that included vegetables that appear on the list of affected produce, were for sale in sales during June.

Symptoms related to the outbreak began on May 14.

"The FDA and CDC have warned health care professionals in these states to be on the lookout for cyclosporiasis patients", Fred added. Some of those who are infected may be asymptomatic. Symptoms typically show up a week after the food was consumed. Without treatment, the infection can last from as little as a few days to more than a month.

Texas said Monday that it was separately investigating 56 cases of cyclosporiasis that health officials there had found since the beginning of May.

The affected products are not believed to be for sale in any of these stores at this time, but may have been purchased by consumers prior to their recall.
