Israel Closes Crossing Point Into Gaza, Halting Imports and Exports

Gaza blockade: Israel shuts goods crossings to pressure Hamas

On Monday, Israel also closed its only goods crossing with the Gaza Strip in response to weeks of fires at farms caused by kites and balloons carrying firebombs from the Palestinian enclave.

Jamal al-Khoudari, chairman of the Popular Committee Against the Israeli Siege of Gaza, said in an emailed statement that Israel's decision "to close Kerem Shalom is a new measure to tighten the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip for 12 years".

Translation: In addition (to closing the crossing), the extension of the Gaza Strip fishing zone to nine miles for the fishing season will expire, returning today to six miles.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the decision to shut down the border was taken in coordination with the country's defense minister.

The flaming kites have set fires to forest and farmland, and have done some damage, though inflicted few casualties.

Since March, Palestinians in Gaza have been taking part in protests near the so called buffer zone.

Gazans began launching the kites in April amid mass protests along the border calling for Palestinian refugees to be able to return to their former homes now inside Israel.

Shark bites Instagram model during Bahamas photo shoot
Speaking to NBC News on Monday, Zarutskie said she had heard from locals that swimming with nurse sharks was risk free. She said she managed to remain calm, holding her wrist above water and using her other hand to stop the flow of blood.

"The arbitrary closure of the crossing would double the population's suffering", he added.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum called the move "a new crime against humanity" and called on the global community to intervene.

Translation: If Hamas continues in this direction, these decisions will continue and will intensify. "There will be additional steps".

Only a day earlier, Qatari envoy Mohammed al-Emadi, who has been working behind the scenes to ease tensions in Gaza, suggested in an interview that Palestinians would stop protests and sending incendiary kites if Israel were to ease the siege and allow 5,000 Palestinians from Gaza to obtain work permits for Israel.

Mahmud Abu Ataya, 25, who recently suffered a leg wound east of Gaza City, said: "I am leaving to be cared for overseas".

The group, which governs the enclave, described Monday's measure as a "crime against the people of Gaza", blaming the global community's prolonged silence that encourages Israel's blockade on the Strip.

This is the second flotilla that has been sent to Gaza since May 29th, where the Israeli naval forces intercepted the first flotilla and arrested 17 passengers on board. In May, 44% of the lorryloads carried construction materials; 29% food products; and 1% medical supplies.
