Katarina Zarutskie, a nursing student in Miami with almost 28,000 Instagram followers and her own blog, was enjoying a trip to the Bahamas last month when she chose to swim with a group of nurse sharks.
A photo she shared on Instagram showed the bite in action.
According to David Hocher, who owns Staniel Cay marina, people do get bitten from time to time while around the sharks.
When asked whether she went into the water because the the post would generate a lot of hits on Instagram and increase the number of followers, Zarutskie replied "no".
The model made a decision to keep calm despite having just been set upon, and raised her arm from the water so the blood wouldn't attract more sharks.
Her boyfriend was snapping pictures when the incident took place.
"My boyfriend's family was freaking out when I went to swim with the sharks and I was like, 'it's fine, '" she said.
Knox wins Irish Open in play-off
Knox, winning his second European Tour title, arrived in Ireland in good shape after finishing second at last week's French Open. After moving day, South African Erik Van Rooyen was in control with a four shot lead heading into the final round.
The sharks are generally docile, but Katarina was bitten and dragged under as she floated among them - which was captured in the photographs.
She said she managed to remain calm, holding her wrist above water and using her other hand to stop the flow of blood. The same could not be said for her family.
'I leaned back, and then that shark he came and he bit down on my arm and pulled me under, ' the 19-year-old told BuzzFeed.
As for Katarina, she know that the sharks didn't do anything wrong.
She does not want the experience or photographs to put off others from visiting the area or interacting with local wildlife when overseas, and describes the Exumas as the "most handsome place" she has ever visited.
Speaking to NBC News on Monday, Zarutskie said she had heard from locals that swimming with nurse sharks was risk free.
Since coming out of the water and reflecting on the situation, she added: "They are wild animals and it's an uncontrollable situation".
