While this deal appears to be out of nowhere, it certainly makes sense. Thomas gives the team another fun weapon to work with, and the Nuggets could be a good situation with which he can prove his abilities, a year removed from a season when he was getting light MVP buzz.
Thomas has been working his way back from a procedure on his hip and if he rebounds on the court this season, he could provide a strong option for the Nuggets while reestablishing his value before becoming a free agent again.
The limited market for Thomas came as a result of a forgettable 32-game 2017-18 season split between the Cavaliers and Lakers, and with Thomas' hip not looking like it was fully healed all the while. The Orlando Magic, who are in desperate need of a point guard to go with all of their big-man talent, made sense and were floated as recently as this afternoon. The uncertainty surrounding his hip injury got him shipped out of Boston and to Cleveland. He struggled upon his return after missing the first two-and-a-half months trying to avoid surgery, had some difficulty adjusting once he did return and was eventually dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers at the trade deadline.
There are still injury concerns, but the Nuggets feel comfortable taking this risk. Thomas will reunite with Michael Malone, who coached him with the Kings.
