Man who harassed woman over Puerto Rico shirt charged with hate crime

Irizarry, who is Puerto Rican and was celebrating her birthday, was wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag when a white man began harassing her.

"After a review of the case, we approved felony hate crimes charges", said Robert Foley, spokesman for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, as reported by the Tribune.

The charges stem from a June incident in which Trybus, who was reportedly intoxicated, confronted a woman for wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag emblazoned across the front. Those charges were upgraded to hate crime charges, according to NBC News, and he was arrested again on Thursday.

The video even got the attention of Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosello, who said he was "appalled, shocked, and disturbed by the officer's behavior".

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America".

Despite Connor's resignation, the forest preserve district says officials continue to investigate the incident.

She had appealed to Officer Connor for help, but he appears to not respond.

The aide, Sitthichai Klangpattana, refused to comment on the boys' health or the operation, which has wrapped up for the day. Monday's rescue effort took about nine hours, two fewer than the day before, in a sign of growing confidence and expertise.

Officer Patrick Connor, a 12-year veteran with the Forest Preserves of Cook County, was initially placed on desk duty after cellphone footage showed him allowing Mia Irizzary to be verbally abused.

In the video, Trybus can be seen approaching the woman and pointing at her shirt as he berates her.

The Forest Preserves of Cook County confirmed that Officer Patrick Connor no longer works for the department following an incident filmed on June 14, which went viral almost a month later. "We are looking at ways to improve all aspects of employee training", said Cook County Forest Preserves General Superintendent Arnold Randall.

"He's very distraught and not happy about having to leave employment much sooner than he intended, but because of the strong reaction from the public and political figures, he thought it would be unrealistic to stay as an officer". "Are you a citizen?" the man can be heard saying in a video recording of the incident posted on Facebook. While Trybus shouts at her, points at her face and follows her around part of the park, Connor can be seen standing about 20 feet away with his hands against his chest.

It's not clear when the investigation into the officer's response will be completed. "Then you should not be wearing that".

Eventually the first officer on the scene takes notes of Irizarry's account of the incident and says that he was at the scene due to the separate incident, noting that she was not being attacked though acknowledging she felt threatened.

Quick aside and history lesson: Puerto Ricans are indeed US citizens.
