In one particularly testy exchange, Trey Gowdy of SC questioned Mr Strzok about messages in which he said "we'll stop" Mr Trump's election and that Democrat Hillary Clinton should win 100m votes to zero.

Page's lawyer claimed she "will cooperate with this investigation" even as Page defied the subpoena to appear on Wednesday before the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform Committees.

Mr. Goodlatte then reminded the witness about a tweet that stated that he had visited a Walmart store in benighted southern Virginia, where, Strzok wrote, he could "SMELL the Trump support".

Strzok said he was embarrassed by the texts, but that they did not represent his or the FBI's work ethic.

An argument ensued between Goodlatte and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the committee's ranking member, who contended that Gowdy was putting Strzok in an "impossible position".

"Imagine if this had been said about Obama", countered the committee chairman. Jerry Nadler of NY.

"Like many people, I had and expressed personal political opinions during an extraordinary presidential election. opinions that were not always expressed in terms I am proud of", he said.

After a fierce line of questioning from Gowdy, Strzok was given the opportunity to contextualize his text with Page.

Strzok argued that Mueller did not remove him from his team because of bias, but because of the perception the texts created.

"You need to understand that that was written late at night off the cuff, and it was a response to a series of events that included then-candidate Trump insulting the immigrant family of a fallen war hero", Strzok told the panel, sparking a burst of applause from the audience.

Vettel wins British GP, Hamilton makes superb recovery
Then when Sauber's Marcus Ericsson skidded off with 19 laps left, Hamilton was handed another lifeline with a safety auto . That is what the statistics say", the Austrian told reporters over lunch at the British Grand Prix .

"Here's the good news, I already know the answer to it", Gowdy said, stating that he had viewed the file showing that Strzok had not interviewed anyone yet during that time. In breaking his months-long silence, Strzok vigorously defended his handling of two hugely sensitive investigations in which he played a leading role: inquiries into Hillary Clinton's email use and possible co-ordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) for their role in what shaped up to be a show trial of the FBI agent accused of protecting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and attempting to influence an FBI investigation of President Donald Trump's election campaign.

"My presumption based on that awful, disgusting behavior [was] that the American population would not elect somebody demonstrating that behavior to be president of the United States".

"But let me be clear, unequivocally and under oath: not once in my 26 years of defending my nation did my personal opinions impact any official action I took".

For a brief moment, lawmakers floated the idea of Strzok having some company when he appears Thursday - as the committee offered Page a spot to testify at Thursday's hearing.

Goodlatte told Alisyn Camerota on CNN's "New Day" Thursday morning that Page had agreed to an interview Friday.

Strzok is attending the public hearing after he was also subpoenaed last week.

"There is no room for personal belief" while conducting official Federal Bureau of Investigation business, Strzok said in response to a question from Oversight ranking member Elijah Cummings of Maryland.

Strzok declined to answer a question from Republican Representative Trey Gowdy, head of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, about interviews he conducted during the FBI's Russian Federation probe, saying the agency had directed him not to discuss ongoing investigations.

Ultimately Strzok responded to a question from Gowdy about the early portion of the Russian Federation investigation by defending his own work and the work of the FBI.
