Lombok natural disaster: Powerful tremors rock Indonesia days after 347 die

09 August 2018, 05:15 | Darnell Patrick

Another major quake hit the tourist island of Lombok in Indonesia, days after a massive magnitude-6.9 natural disaster on Sunday evening killed more than 300 people.

It's the third tremor to hit Lombok in the space of two weeks.

Humanitarian groups say that they are focusing their efforts on reaching these areas which have so far been impassable because of collapsed buildings, roads and other destruction related to Sunday's quake.

It said it did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

"This number will continue increasing as rescue teams continue to find victims under collapsed buildings", the agency said in a statement.

"We are still waiting for assessments from some of the more remote areas in the north of the island, but it is already clear that Sunday's quake was exceptionally destructive", Mr Rassi said.

Almost 1500 people have been hospitalised with serious injuries from Sunday's quake and more than 156,000 have been displaced due to the extensive damage to thousands of homes.

Survivors of the quake have also been shaken by hundreds of aftershocks, including a shallow 5.9-magnitude quake Thursday which caused people to flee evacuation shelters crying and screaming.

"I visited villages yesterday that were completely collapsed".

Tens of thousands of homes, businesses and mosques were levelled by the quake, which struck on Sunday as evening prayers were being said across the Muslim-majority island.

But Mr Sutopo said some areas in the north had still not received any aid.

"People are always saying they need water and tarps", Spokesman Arifin Hadi told the AP about the current rescue efforts.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it had set up 10 mobile clinics in the north of the island.

One aid agency, Yayasan Plan International Indonesia, has warned that thousands of children have been left homeless, forced to sleep in open fields without warm clothing or blankets.
