At least 543 tourists have been rescued from a mountain in Indonsia's Lombok Island following a deadly quake that killed 16 people and cut off routes, a government official said on Tuesday.

"There are still 560 people trapped". The country is home to about 130 active volcanoes.

"At the moment both domestic and global tourists are on their way down", I Gusti Lanang Wiswananda, a spokesman for West Nusa Tenggara search and rescue, told AFP.

The rescuers are now evacuating 10 other climbers after finding them earlier on Tuesday.

Hundreds managed to find a way down on Sunday and over 500 more reached safety Monday night.

The team was sent after a magnitude 6.4 SR quake jolted Lombok on Sunday morning, July 29, leaving 16 people dead and scores of houses destroyed.

An quake measuring 6.4 magnitude on the Richter Scale struck off eastern Indonesia on Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). A local hotel owner, Jean Paul Volchaert, reported his own experience of these aftershocks, saying, "we felt aftershocks for two hours after the initial quake, so we're anxious that there could be more damage caused".
