Police in Fredericton, New Brunswick responded to the shooting in a residential neighborhood at around 7am on Friday, taking one suspect into custody after an intensive emergency response.

Police later tweeted that one suspect was in custody.

Fredericton's deputy police chief Martin Gaudet said the two officers arrived at the apartment complex and saw two deceased civilians before being shot and killed themselves.

"Please appreciate this is a hard time for their families and our colleagues", the force tweeted, adding that more information would be released when they're able. "We will provide more details as soon as we can", city police tweeted.

Atlantic time, when local resident David MacCoubrey said he woke up to the sound of three gunshots outside his bedroom window.

Officers now say there is no longer a threat to public safety. "I wasn't surprised to see that he later became an officer".
