NBA trade news Jimmy Butler has been linked with the Lakers

Kawhi Leonard has finally spoken.

In the time since then, Leonard made a trade request to the Spurs and had that request be granted in the form of a deal sending him to Toronto and DeMar DeRozan to San Antonio.

Leonard has passed the physical exam with Toronto necessary to finalize the trade and has met with team president Masai Ujiri, general manager Bobby Webster and head coach Nick Nurse.

Spurs doctors had cleared Leonard to return to play last season, but he sought second opinions and did not return, making his health a question mark following the trade.

The 2018-2019 regular season for the National Basketball Association will tip off October 16, with the Spurs regular season schedule due out this Friday.

Leonard - who now plays for the Toronto Raptors - thanked his the Spurs organization and the San Antonio community for the successful years they had together.

"Through all the ups and downs - I'm glad there were many more ups!"

Leonard is known as a very private and quiet athlete, but on Thursday he did release his first statement and while it's full of "thank you's" towards his former club, there's no mention about his new team.

Before saying one final thank you, Leonard says, "I'll always remember the city and the people of San Antonio".

"It's cool to see all the kids excited to hang out with us, and I'm excited to hang out with them", White said.
