When the Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned in a straight line, an eclipse occurs. Although, this myth gains traction around the time of a total solar eclipse, some people refuse to cook or eat even during partial eclipses.
The partial solar eclipse which is occurring today will not be visible in India but you can still witness it through your naked eyes while sitting comfortably on your couch.
The space agency says Saturday will be the last eclipse, lunar or solar, of the calendar year.
The peak of the partial eclipse was at 9.46am UT (10.46am BST) and ended at 11.30am UT (12.30pm BST).
The partial eclipse will hardly be visible from countries that fall below the Arctic Circle including India.
The first solar eclipse of 2018 happened in the beginning of the year on February 15 while the second solar eclipse occurred on July 13.
People are also advised not to eat during solar eclipse.
In case you haven't been keeping track, this will be the third eclipse in less than a month. The moon's shadow travels above the earth's surface, and the sun's light (as seen from earth) is blocked out.
Although in India, skywatchers won't be able to watch the partial solar eclipse.
Because of the moon's orbit, either two weeks before or after a total lunar eclipse, the moon reaches the opposite side of its orbit and crosses the ecliptic again - this time, at new-moon phase - resulting in an eclipse of the sun.
Other parts of the world that will have views of the partial solar eclipse, albeit a much smaller version of it, include Harbin, China, Nuuk, Greenland and Seoul, South Korea.
If one want's to capture the event on camera, either for photo's or video's, they should add a special solar filter for protection. During a partial solar eclipse, only a portion of the sun is covered by the moon's shadow, making it just as bright as the sun on a typical day. Addressing this particular belief of poisonous food during a solar eclipse, NASA had said a year ago, "Related to the false idea of harmful solar rays is that during a total solar eclipse, some kind of radiation is produced that will harm your food". Instead, they suggest the "Pinhole Projection" or the "Optical Protection" methods for viewing safety.
