Betts hits for cycle in Sox' loss

ROLLING FOR A SEVEN Rick Porcello delivers a pitch last night in Toronto as the Red Sox looked to finish a sweep of the Blue Jays below Andrew Benintendi gets congratulations in the dugout after scoring a run in the first inning

Boston, which owns the best record in the major leagues at 81-34, has won 12 of 15 meetings with Toronto this season.

Mookie Betts hit for the cycle for the first time in his career Thursday night, but it was not enough to give the visiting Boston Red Sox a three-game sweep over the Toronto Blue Jays, who held on to win 8-5.

Chris Iannetta went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, and Nolan Arenado also had three hits for the Rockies, who have lost three of four on their homestand and fell to 2-7 in August.

"Any time when you grind and you can help your team win a ballgame, especially against Boston, is definitely uplifting a little bit", he said.

Teoscar Hernandez also had a homer for the Blue Jays (52-62) and Justin Smoak drove in a pair of runs. He singled in the first, tripled in the second, doubled in the fourth, and homered in the ninth as part of a 4-for-4 night.

Betts is joined in the Red Sox lineup by fellow African-American Jackie Bradley Jr., a former star at the University of SC, who is arguably the most spectacular center fielder in baseball, as his catches regularly make the evening's highlights. "He'll take is walks, too".

Maurizio Sarri: 'I must adapt to Chelsea'
But the Spaniard just looked a yard off pace from the start with sloppy passing and some poor first touches. Chelsea beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 to give Maurizio Sarri a winning start as manager of the Blues.

J.D. Martinez homered for the Red Sox, his major-league-leading 35th of the season.

Meanwhile, Porcello walked the first two batters he faced and it only got worse from there. He is 0-2 despite a 2.29 ERA in three starts against the Red Sox this year. The Blue Jays tied it later in the inning. Haniger, Denard Span and Jean Segura combined for 10 hits and seven RBI with a home run each off Verlander. The two-out hit came after Boston loaded the bases on a leadoff single by Betts, an infield single by Andrew Benintendi and a walk by Xander Bogaerts.

"I'm trying to be competitive and have good at-bats", Smoak said of his streak. Brantley followed with the game-winning single through a drawn-in infield into right field. The last leadoff hitter to do so was Brock Holt, in 2015.

In a season where the Blue Jays starting pitching plans were mostly torn to shreds, Borucki has come on to be a bit of a revelation. Hernandez and Grichuk have homered in consecutive games.

Holt started the sixth with a home run to make it 8-6.

Toronto's Jaime Garcia pitched around a walk in the sixth.
