Kavanaugh Confirmation Hearing to Start Sept. 4
Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassleyannounced that the hearing would begin September 4, less than two months after President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh July 9 to replace retired justice Anthony Kennedy. Chuck Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said the committee will launch up to four days of review on Tuesday, beginning with opening remarks from senators.
The deal, struck by Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and the Bush library, would only turn over records from Kavanaugh's two years as Senior Associate Counsel in the Bush White House, and not his three years as Staff Secretary and Assistant to the President, and would allow Bush's legal team to select which documents the public will see. "He's met with dozens of senators who have nothing but positive things to say", Grassley said in a statement. "It's time for the American people to hear directly from Judge Kavanaugh at his public hearing". But due to the 51-49 split in the Senate, Republicans will need to be almost unanimous, or persuade a few Democrats, if they want Kavanaugh to be confirmed.
"Judge Kavanaugh has been endorsed by leading figures on the right and the left".
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) said Friday that he expected the Senate to confirm Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh was nominated on July 9 and since then, the committee has received 184,000 pages of records related to his work as a White House lawyer and for his work with Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr. He has a record of judicial independence and applying the law as it is written.

Wall St. Falls Amid Turkey Woes; Banks, Tech Decline
Oil prices were down slightly as the escalating China-U.S. trade dispute cast doubt on the outlook for crude demand. The tech-heavy index was up 0.33 percent at 7,914.22, a quarter of a percent away from hitting an all-time high.
Grassley praised Kavanaugh as a highly respected and qualified nominee. The committee also expects to receive hundreds of thousands of additional pages of ExecutiveBranch documents.
Harris, the potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidate who sits on the Judiciary Committee, will likely use the confirmation hearing-and the huge national klieg lights that come with it-to elevate her profile with left-wing primary voters ahead of a potential presidential campaign.
Breitbart News' Ken Klukowski has pointed out that Kavanaugh's opinions have been in the public domain for years and Kavanaugh "returned the most comprehensive, bipartisan Senate questionnaire in the history of the Judiciary Committee". But Democrats want access to more documents from Kavanaugh's past as a judge and as an official in the George W. Bush administration.
But the documents have been a major point of contention in the Senate. This process gives an unfair advantage to senators supporting Judge Kavanaugh's nomination, at the expense of a fully transparent process that allows for full disclosure and scrutiny by all voting lawmakers.
