The announcement follows an article published in ESPN this week that referenced players' complaints that Durkin and Rick Court, the person in charge of team's strength and conditioning staff, cultivated a culture of toxicity on and off the field.

Pending the final outcome of this review, the university has placed members of the Athletics staff on administrative leave.

It was only a matter of time before other coaches were asked about the bombshell reports that described a toxic culture at Maryland but the award for one of the more tone-deaf statements in the wake of serious allegations stemming from a player's depth appears to come from SC head coach Will Muschamp on Saturday. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada will serve as interim head coach.

In 2010, Durkin was reunited with Urban Meyer when he joined the Florida Gators as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator.

Muschamp blasted the use of anonymous sources in the report, calling those who spoke to ESPN "gutless", while describing Durkin as "an outstanding football coach".

Will Muschamp slams 'gutless' reporting of Maryland football allegations

"In light of deeply troubling reports about the University of Maryland football program's training practices and general culture, I support the university's decision to suspend Coach DJ Durkin, and expect that the investigation into the program will be wide-ranging and thorough", Hogan said in a statement. A report is expected by September 15. McNair's parents hired a Baltimore law firm to also investigate.

The football program at the University of Maryland was struck by tragedy earlier this year when offensive lineman Jordan McNair died two weeks after collapsing in the aftermath of a team workout.

"He is an outstanding football coach", Muschamp said. An attorney for the family told ESPN that McNair had a seizure on a practice field after running sprints and Maryland athletic trainers waited almost an hour before calling emergency personnel to provide treatment.

Durkin had served as defensive coordinator at the University of MI and was brought to Maryland after previous coach Randy Edsall was sacked by the university.

Staples said she has never had any interactions with Court. Sources also told that Court, assistant athletic director of sports performance was also placed on leave.

"He worked us hard", Fitzgerald told the AP. His job is to make us physically fit and ready for the season and that's exactly what he did.
