‘Storm of lifetime’: Hurricane Florence barrels toward Carolinas as residents flee
The last Category 4 hurricane to plow directly into North Carolina was Hazel in 1954, a devastating storm that killed 19 people and destroyed some 15,000 homes. The storm was about 235 miles east-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina and was moving at about 17 mph on Thursday.
The trend is "exceptionally bad news", said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy, since it "smears a landfall out over hundreds of miles of coastline, most notably the storm surge".
Due to the slow speed of the actual movement of the hurricane itself, it is anticipated that the storm will "stall" over land, resulting in a huge amount of rainfall and flooding.
Millions have been ordered to evacuate their homes as the storm rages closer to the mainland.
Florence is so wide that a life-threatening storm surge was being pushed 300 miles ahead of its eye, and so wet that a swathe from SC to OH and Pennsylvania could get deluged.

"A motion toward the northwest is forecast to begin by this afternoon and continue through Thursday", the hurricane center says.
While many people focus on the wind speed of storms, the danger often comes from the water flowing in from the ocean.
North Carolina officials evacuated long-term care facilities and hundreds of prisoners in vulnerable areas, and also closed state parks, museums and other attractions.
"This will be a storm that creates and causes massive damage to our country".
