‘Storm of lifetime’: Hurricane Florence barrels toward Carolinas as residents flee

Hurricane Florence: Trump signs state of emergency as millions flee ahead of impact | Daily Star

The last Category 4 hurricane to plow directly into North Carolina was Hazel in 1954, a devastating storm that killed 19 people and destroyed some 15,000 homes. The storm was about 235 miles east-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina and was moving at about 17 mph on Thursday.

Hurricane Florence is forecast to remain a major hurricane through late week as it moves toward the Southeast coast, according the National Hurricane Center.

The trend is "exceptionally bad news", said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy, since it "smears a landfall out over hundreds of miles of coastline, most notably the storm surge".

Due to the slow speed of the actual movement of the hurricane itself, it is anticipated that the storm will "stall" over land, resulting in a huge amount of rainfall and flooding.

Millions have been ordered to evacuate their homes as the storm rages closer to the mainland.

Florence is so wide that a life-threatening storm surge was being pushed 300 miles ahead of its eye, and so wet that a swathe from SC to OH and Pennsylvania could get deluged.

Officials in several states have declared states of emergency, including in the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia and Maryland, where coastal areas are still recovering from summer storms. "A lot of local people are staying", she said of the island, which is reachable only by ferry or plane.

"This is not going to be a glancing blow", warned Jeff Byard, an administrator with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Goes-East weather-monitoring satellite used its lightning mapping technology for a video showing Florence, Tropical Storm Isaac and Hurricane Helene as they traveled across the Atlantic on Tuesday.

Gov. Nathan Deal isn't taking any chances with Hurricane Florence.

"We've had some changes in the storms direction, some that are concerning us", Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said Wednesday. Find out now if you live in a flood prone area or a location that will be greatly impacted by storm surge. At the least, I expect those in the red zone to experience some impacts from wind and rain.

"A motion toward the northwest is forecast to begin by this afternoon and continue through Thursday", the hurricane center says.

While many people focus on the wind speed of storms, the danger often comes from the water flowing in from the ocean.

North Carolina officials evacuated long-term care facilities and hundreds of prisoners in vulnerable areas, and also closed state parks, museums and other attractions.

"This will be a storm that creates and causes massive damage to our country".

A state of emergency being declared in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The National Weather Service says nearly half of all deaths from tropical cyclones come from storm surge. Cars and trucks full of people and belongings streamed inland.
