Florence UPDATE for Friday landfall North Carolina

Florence UPDATE for Friday landfall North Carolina

The White House tweeted: "Hurricane Florence poses a catastrophic threat to millions living in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia".

Henry McMaster lifted the mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Florence in Beaufort, Jasper and Colleton counties Wednesday, Beaufort County schools will remain closed Wednesday.

According to analytics firm CoreLogic, the hurricane could wreak more than $170billion (£130billion) in havoc and damage almost 759,000 homes and businesses. Rather than pushing up toward western Virginia, the storm's center is now predicted to move across the middle of SC.

Shepard Smith and Flaherty said reports showed storm surge from the system is likely to be felt dozens of miles inland, including along the Neuse River Basin - which stretches inward from New Bern toward Rocky Mount and Nashville, N.C.

The eastbound lanes of several major highways have been shut to allow traffic to flow inland, but the exodus was slow along roads jammed with outward-bound vehicles.

He said: "We are ready but this is going to be one of the biggest ones to ever hit our country".

For the third time in four seasons, weather will impact South Carolina's football schedule, this time wiping a game completely off the schedule. "Now it might be time for the exam", Baxley said late in the morning. Sound unlikely? Thousands of Marines and their families evacuated from Camp Lejeune, leaving the rest to dig in ahead of what could be a direct hit.

In a trailer park outside Wilmington, Alondra Espinoza was preparing to leave with her two young children. Will the winds be that strong or they'll be stronger when they get here than that? "Everyone was sold out", she said. "If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have minded staying here".

William Manley, a spokesman for the Florida National Guard, said the National Guard will not deploy units to assist with natural disasters unless the affected states - the Carolinas in this case - request help. So, the winds will be winding down much quicker near the coast before those winds get up here.

"All interests from SC into the Mid-Atlantic region should ensure they have their hurricane plan in place and follow any advice given by local officials", the Hurricane Center said.

Airlines have begun to cancel flights at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in advance of Hurricane Florence.
