Man arrested in Saudi Arabia for having breakfast with woman

Saudi police arrest man for having breakfast with woman in public

The video shows the woman, who is wearing a full niqab, picks up a piece of food and puts it in his mouth.

What would seem to be a perfectly fine video to millenials in any part of the world may not be perceived in the same way in Saudi Arabia. Be it McDonald's or Starbucks, women have to sit separately from single men.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Development said Bahaa was arrested for appearing in an "offensive video" and said rules "regulating women's placement at work" were violated, according to CNN.

Women are exempted from carrying out most outside activities without being accompanied by a man, father, husband, brother or son.

Saudi authorities have detained an Egyptian hotel worker who filmed himself eating breakfast and joking with a female colleague. The point that has prompted the most anger is at the end of the 30-second video when the woman appears to feed the man.

The ministry has also summoned the owner of the hotel "for failing to adhere to spatial controls for employing women", the statement added. So when Saudi men see an Egyptian man eating with a Saudi woman, well, you get the picture.

Abuse scandals have also shaken the Catholic Church in Australia, Chile and Ireland, among other countries. The U.S. isn't alone in digging into its past.

Others have called for the woman to be prosecuted as well while many rallied around the two colleagues under the hashtag "an Egyptian having breakfast with a Saudi" which has been used over 100,000 times.

The Saudi public prosecutor's office posted a warning on Twitter that foreigners working in the Kingdom should "respect Saudi values, traditions, and feelings".

The backlash underscores the challenges that the prince faces as he seeks to modernize a country steeped in conservatism.

Of course, the opinions are mixed, in Saudi Arabia, the people criticized why the man was the only one arrested and also wanted the woman punished.

Earlier this year he ended a decades-long ban on women driving and allowed women to enter concerts and football matches.
