WNBA Finals: Storm sweep Mystics to win third title

Seattle Storm forward Breanna Stewart hugs teammate Sue Bird on the court after winning Game 3 of the WNBA basketball finals Wednesday Sept. 18 2018 in Fairfax Va. The Seattle Storm defeated the Washington Mystics 98-82

They had done it. "I was ready to take (the championship trophy) back to Seattle where it belongs".

Stewart said the first time she got to sleep after winning the title Wednesday night was on the plane ride home.

"Each (championship) is special in its own way, but this one is probably going to have a different meaning for me", the 37-year-old veteran point guard said. "I've been having hard time putting it into words, it's been that meaningful".

Fans of the former Huskies paid close attention to the championship game.

The top five markets were: Seattle-Tacoma (3.6), Hartford & New Haven (1.7), Washington, DC (1.2), New Orleans (0.9), Memphis (0.9).

The best season in Mystics franchise history ended in heartbreak.

Stewart agreed that Howard made things easier for her this season.

Sue Bird, also a member of a Seattle's championship teams in 2004 and 2010, had 10 points and 10 assists. The team was young, and Bird knew they were rebuilding, but she chose to stay.

Stewart was not sure what her plans were for Thursday, but said she had a role model to watch.

Trump said on Twitter that "they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths" at the time he visited the island after the storm. Hostin further bashed the Trump administration for not doing enough to stop preventable deaths after the storm.

"I didn't think I'd be back", Bird told Rowe, holding back tears.

"She was the ideal complement to Breanna Stewart". "She helped to relieve the pressure off me".

"This has been, oddly, a very stressful playoff run", Bird said. "This wasn't about me". I just wanted to bridge that gap as fast as I could, and they've been great. So for me to be here now - not that I didn't enjoy the other ones - I am just truly, truly enjoying this right now. "And we get to build on it for these next three games".

As did numerous players who represent those teams, such as Seahawks stars Earl Thomas, Russell Wilson and Frank Clark. She's confident in this team, whether she's on the floor or not.

The post-game locker room scene was a brief moment.

The Storm rolled to a 16-point lead after the first half behind dominant performances from Stewart and center Natasha Howard. In Game 5 of the semifinals she had 28 points.

Three SBL MVP awards, three WNBL All-Star five selections and two Lynx MVP awards later, she has added a WNBA title to her name.

"A successful one", Toliver said of the season. A little over a year ago Stewart opened up about her past, sharing with the world that as a child she had been sexually assaulted by the husband of a relative. Vandersloot is making her All-WNBA debut. You just never know. She laid on the arena floor, slightly below the elevated basketball court where she initially fell from while trying to make a hustle play, where she was in agony as tears ran down her cheeks. It really is. It all feels so surreal. "We're one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the league. I mean, we're the champs".
