George Weah, Liberia's current president and former global football star, made an unexpected return to a professional football match at age 51.

Liberia's President George Weah laughs during a news conference at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, April 4, 2018.

The forward made his debut against Togo in June 2017 but has failed to get a starting role in his previous three games for the Super Eagles.

After the game, Liberia retired jersey number 14, which was worn by Weah during his footballing peak.

On Tuesday evening, he played against Nigeria during a friendly.

"We have to find him, expose him to the world and give him the opportunity to actualise his dream", a statement by Olajire quoted Weah, African, European and World Footballer of the Year in 1995 as saying.

Alas, Weah didn't manage to add to his global goal tally, but he did last an entirely impressive 79 minutes before being subbed off to a standing ovation.

The friendly match came up a few weeks before his 52nd birthday, and took place in Monrovia.

Simeon Nwankwo headed Nigeria into a 2-0 lead shortly before Kpah Sherman got one for Liberia.

Which team are you supporting in the 2018 World Cup?

The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated the Lone Star of Liberia 2-1 in Tuesday's exhibition game played at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium, Monrovia.

In his playing days, Weah was an inspiration to young Africans who watched the Liberian in the colours of AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain or even in his twilight at Chelsea.
