Former Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort Agrees to Plead Guilty; Avoids Second Trial
Paul Manafort has chose to plead guilty to charges brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller and avoid a second criminal trial, but it's unclear whether he will cooperate with Mueller's inquiry into Russian election interference.
The charges include conspiracy against the United States and conspiracy to obstruct justice. "He also agreed to forfeit some properties", Bloomberg News reported.
The charges in his second trial were set to include money laundering, conspiring to defraud the United States, witness tampering and failing to register as a foreign agent.
Manafort was convicted last month on eight counts of fraud, bank fraud and failing to disclose banks accounts.
In the new filing, prosecutors dropped the bulk of the charges against Manafort, filing new paperwork that includes just two counts that resemble in many ways the original allegations made in an indictment previous year.

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who is now representing Trump in the Russian Federation probe, told Reuters on Friday that a guilty plea to avoid a second trial would not crush Manafort's chances of receiving an eventual presidential pardon. Manafort faces up to a decade in prison after the Virginia jury verdict, and a conviction in Washington could have increased his prison time. In the D.C. case, Manafort was facing a judge less sympathetic than the judge who presided over the Virginia trial, U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis.
"If he's helping out Mueller, that's more bad news for Trump". Prosecutors said he used that untaxed income to support a lavish lifestyle. Manafort was lobbying on behalf of a pro-Russian party in Ukraine, the Party of Regions, and was credited of resuscitating the career of its leader, Viktor Yanukovych, who won the presidency in 2010.
More from Bloomberg.com: U.S. Trump has raised the idea of a pardon for Manafort with White House aides and others, a source told NPR.
It remains unclear if the deal will include Manafort's cooperation with Mueller's probe, dealing a blow to Trump ahead of congressional elections on November 6.
Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort arrives for arraignment on a third superseding indictment against him by Special Counsel Robert Mueller on charges of witness tampering, at U.S. District Court in Washington, U.S. June 15, 2018. "And prosecutors would naturally follow the money trail from Manafort's Ukrainian consulting activities". He volunteered that year to work for free on the Trump campaign, shepherding the candidate through the Republican National Convention before being pushed aside as questions about his influence-peddling emerged.
