The woman eating at a restaurant chain in China made the disgusting discovery a few bites into her meal

The unnamed woman was out for a meal on September 6 in Weifang city, Shandong Province when she found the rodent in her hot pot broth at a branch of the restaurant chain Xiabu Xiabu.

It also reportedly offered the couple a 5,000 yuan compensation.

When her husband alerted the staff, they allegedly offered the couple 20,000 yuan (S$4,000) to get an abortion if they were anxious about their baby's health, KanKan News reported.

The woman's husband, Mr Ma, said he alerted restaurant staff to the situation and was offered cash for abortion if they were anxious about the health of the baby. Some users said that they would never eat there ever again.

Users of Chinese social media site Weibo reacted to the photos and video with disgust, with one person writing: "I feel like vomiting". Its discovery received particular attention online because of the way that the restaurant's staff chose to deal with the situation.

After the incident, Xiabu Xiabu's market value fell by 11 per cent(S$291 million) on Tuesday (Sept 11). Xiabu Xiabu and one of its rivals, Haidilao, have reported surging sales and an expanding network of restaurants. It's a fun, sociable meal popular across China - a country with much regional variation in cuisine - and chains are cropping up alongside mom-and-pop stalls.

Xiabu Xiabu initially released a statement Saturday night saying that it had "ruled out the possibility that an unhygienic environment has caused the rat to appear", but that statement was later deleted.

The rat was found at the Xiabu Xiabu restaurant in Weifang.

In a statement, the restaurant said they took food safety seriously and were making changes.
