This is the terrifying moment Shipwreck Beach in Zante, Greece was hit by tonnes of rock falling from a cliff.

Rescue teams with sniffer dogs have reportedly been dispatched to help local authorities search for the missing.

The chaos following the rockfall at Navagio Beach on the Greek island of Zakynthos on Thursday was described by some tourists as being "like Dunkirk".

Video footage shows beach-goers running in panic as part of a cliff peels off the rock wall at the end of Navagio beach, tumbling to the sand.

A couple of small vessels overturned from the force of the fall and the subsequent high waves.

Among those injured was a 34-year-old woman from the Czech Republic, who suffered a fractured vertebra. The rock was so large, it caused a small tsunami, with large waves crashing onto the beach.

Another six people, including two children, had received treatment for minor injuries, a hospital official in Zakynthos told Reuters.

The coastguard said everyone who had visited the beach on tourist boats had been accounted for.

The port of Zakynthos, which is also known as Zante in Western Europe, was evacuated as a precaution.
