The 32-year-old Brook wants to fight his fellow Briton at the end of this year
Colombian-born Vargas had already been put down himself when he stunned Khan and the capacity crowd and with Brook watching at ringside, Khan recovered and floored Vargas again before eventually running out unanimous points victor.
In his second fight since returning from a two year break, Amir Khan needed to go to the scorecards to defeat Samuel Vargas in Birmingham.
After a tough fight against Vargas, Khan is now eyeing a showdown with Manny Pacquiao or Kell Brook.
"Both fights are massive but Manny is someone I'd love to fight first".
Khan, who became Britain's youngest Olympic medallist in 2004 at the age of 17, said: "My next fight after this will be for the world title; the fight against Vargas is an interim fight before that so basically this fight is the one before the world title fight".
"He caught me with a right overhand, right on the button". But Pacquiao looks the more realistic opponent for Khan to aim for.
"There were times in the fight when I wanted to put him (Vargas) away, there were times when I could have pushed it and knocked him out", he added. He's the fastest fighter I've ever seen.
Luckily for Khan, he was able to get his legs back underneath him again and listened to the advice of new head trainer Joe Goossen, who urged him to "calm down". But Khan replied with a quick flurry and the Briton seemed in control, but at the same time vulnerable. The bell arrived to save Khan, who scored another knockdown in the third before the pace gradually slowed.
"I want to fight before the end of the year so this was a great warm-up fight for me".
He was up quickly but was immediately sent staggering backwards again amid more lightning Khan combinations.
But Khan's work rate dipped in the tenth, allowing Vargas to land more punches and finished the round by landing a solid right hook on Khan's chin which turned his legs to jelly.
A clash with his old adversary Brook has also been touted, however, Khan has suggested that a clash with the Filipino superstar would be preferable.
