Gordon reported the hamstring injury Saturday a source said.

It is unclear specifically why the Browns chose to cut ties with Gordon, but his release will bring to an end a saga of off-the-field problems related to Gordon's substance abuse suspensions and addiction.

After previously announcing wide receiver Josh Gordon was dealing with a hamstring injury, the team announced they had released the 27-year-old wideout shortly after.

"This afternoon we informed Josh Gordon and his representatives that we are going to release him on Monday", general manager John Dorsey said in a statement.

Gordon returned to the team days prior to the preseason finale after spending almost a month tending to those personal matters.

Gordon missed most of training camp on a leave of absence to focus on his ongoing recovery with addiction.

Gordon hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyrod Taylor that allowed the Browns to draw even with the Steelers and force overtime, where the game ended in a 21-21 tie, a first in the 68-year history of the rivalry. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Browns are "far more likely" to trade Gordon rather than release him.

The Browns announced earlier Saturday that Gordon was ruled out to play against the New Orleans Saints because of a hamstring injury.

Additionally, Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot reports that Gordon showed up late to the facility on Saturday and was described as "not himself", which the Browns believed was a sign of a potential relapse.

Gordon had 18 receptions for 335 yards and one touchdown last season, in five games.

Gordon was finally reinstated by the league on November 2017.

Josh Gordon will soon be a free agent.
