Hurricane Florence smashes into US East Coast, rescuers scramble

16 September 2018, 07:41 | Ross Houston

"A mother and infant were killed when a tree fell on their house", police tweeted Friday afternoon.

The child's father was transported to a hospital with injuries, according to Wilmington police.

She went to say that she did not start to get anxious until about 3 a.m. when the power went out and she wasn't able to get the generator restarted.

By early afternoon, Florence's winds had weakened to 75 miles per hour, just barely a hurricane and well below the storm's terrifying Category 4 peak of 140 miles per hour earlier in the week.

Hurricane Hunter aircraft measured Florence's sustained winds at 75 miles per hour, keeping the storm as a very weak Category 1 hurricane as of 1 p.m.

Jennifer Morales, 20, said there was 3 feet of water in her home. "I see the beach communities' being inundated with water and destruction that will be pretty, pretty epic".

Video footage showed parking lots in the riverfront town of New Bern turn into shallow lakes of dirty gray water as heavy rain fell.

Meanwhile, in SC , at least one gator seemed to be cool with the outer bands of wind and rain that whipped the Myrtle Beach area. As her son fed the goats in a hotel parking lot, she said she might not be able to return home until the middle of next week.

With winds picking up along the coastline earlier Thursday, federal and state officials had issued final appeals to residents to get out of the path of the "once in a lifetime" weather system.

Another death was reported in North Carolina during the storm.

More than 30 inches of rain have fallen in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

"Hurricane Florence is powerful, slow and relentless", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) said at a news conference Friday. In North and SC was energized more than 620 thousand households.

For people living inland in the Carolinas, the moment of maximum peril from flash flooding could arrive days later, because it takes time for rainwater to drain into rivers and for those streams to crest.

"We've rescued over 100 people in New Bern, NC; people from Jacksonville, NC, had to be rescued from a hotel", Cooper said, describing efforts to save residents north of Wilmington, where high floods have already hit.
