Putin watches war games billed as Russia's biggest ever; China taking part

The week-long Vostok-2018 manoeuvres span vast expanses of Siberia and Asia-Pacific the Arctic and the Pacific Ocean and showcase the military might of Russia and China at a time of simmering tensions with the US

Russian Federation has said the drills are purely defensive in nature but North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has condemned them as a rehearsal for "large-scale conflict".

The exercises in the far east continue until September 17.

Putin justified the exercises as "necessary" to defend "motherland" Russia's sovereignty, security, national interests and to support allies such as Syria.

"Therefore we are going to further strengthen our armed forces, supply them with the latest generations of weapons and equipment, develop worldwide military partnership", Putin said.

Putin praised the "mastery" of the Russian army and its "capacity to face down potential threats" after watching the drills at the Tsugol military training ground near the borders with Mongolia and China.

Russian military figures said the exercise showed it had a renewed focus on combat readiness, which has sparked concern in western capitals.

"Today here, at the Tsugol range in the Zabaikalsky Territory, the most active stage of the (Vostok-2018) drills came to an end".

Keir Giles, a Russian military expert at the UK-based Chatham House think-tank, the overall aim of the drill is to "prepare Russia for armed conflict with the West".

Putin said Russian Federation is a "peaceful nation" that "does not have any aggressive plans".

"Russia is a peace-loving state. We do not have and cannot have any plan of aggression", has, however, assured Mr Putin.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov argued the exercises were "justified" in "the current global situation" given "aggressive and unfriendly" attitudes towards Russian Federation.

"In fact, it is a self-fulfilling prophecy".
