Volkswagen announced on Thursday that it would end the production of its iconic "Beetle" auto from 2019, marking the end of the road for a vehicle that had its roots in the political dreams of Adolf Hitler over 80 years ago.
In March of this year representatives of the company Volkswagen announced that the Beetle will not be a new generation.
It was also popular with the 1960s counter-culture types who extolled the Beetle's small, practical, but aesthetic qualities.
It's hard to imagine the end of the Beetle name in the Volkswagen portfolio for good. But the USA market is very different and a number of models discontinued elsewhere continue to sell in big numbers in parts of North America. And while its signature, model-specific colors are the Safari Uni and Stonewashed Blue pictured here, VW will offer the Final EditionBeetle in white, black and gray, as well.
Beetles became a global phenomenon after managing to shake off their Nazi roots. After all, this wouldn't even be the first time what we still consider to be the "new" Beetle has had a Final Edition.
The company is not leaving behind all of its well-known older models.
VW had been pulling the Beetle from select markets as part of a broader effort by the German giant to rein in its bloated product range, which spans more than 300 different vehicles and variants, including heavy trucks, motorbikes and passenger cars. An electric version of the Beetle has been speculated, but a detailed response from Volkswagen is yet awaited.
Available either coupe or convertible bodies in SE or SEL trim levels, the Beetle Final Edition can be swathed in two exclusive colors or one of three paint shades shared with the rest of the Beetle line. The Beetle comes with lots of features like a touch-screen infotainment system, leather seats, cruise control, automatic headlamps and more.
