Vikings fear for star who allegedly threatened hotel shooting

The police report released Tuesday details ongoing struggles Griffen had been dealing with weeks before the incident at the Hotel Ivy on Saturday

Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen is away from the team now, as he addresses his mental health.

According to a police report obtained by Paul Walsh of The Star Tribune, Griffen's wife said he left home on September 16 after he awoke suddenly in the middle of the night, which is something he does at times when fighting "demons" in his head. No gun was ever found, but police did begin searching for the Pro Bowler after his wife repeatedly called them and reported he was behaving oddly. He was eventually transported by ambulance to an area hospital for his well-being, despite jumping out of the vehicle at one point during a brief stop for crossing deer.

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen is under hospital supervision after an incident at a Minneapolis hotel on Saturday.

The Vikings released a statement saying, "We are aware of the situation involving Griffen Griffen and certainly concerned by what we have heard".

"We have a very, very good support program, and our owners do an unbelievable job of giving players all the resources that they need", Zimmer said.

Griffen's wife, told police he was "fighting with demons in his head" and had recently told her, "I just want help", police said. Griffen, 30, had been declared out of that game on Friday but his absence from the Vikings' sideline was surprising.

Modric edged out Liverpool's Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah and Ronaldo , who along with Messi gave the awards ceremony a miss. It was the first time since 2007 that the award was won by another footballer that wasn't either Ronaldo or Lionel Messi .

Griffen's wife then called and said he was at teammate Trae Waynes' home down the road.

Additionally, according to the Minnesota Star-Tribune, Griffen was "growing increasingly paranoid and feared someone was trying to kill him in the weeks and days" ahead of Saturday's incident. The reporting officer placed a health and welfare hold on Griffen "based upon his actions and information I had acquired about him".

Griffen was ruled out ahead of last Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills with a knee injury. Griffen later returned home shirtless in a truck with a man who had seen him at a gas station and given him a ride.

Everson got into the man's passenger seat and ordered him to drive around. Zimmer made it clear that Griffen is missed both on the field and in the locker room, but said there are more important things to be anxious about. He was arrested twice as a rookie in 2011, once for public intoxication and soon after for allegedly assaulting a police officer during a traffic stop.

"He's always been a really, really good model for us, and obviously he's going through some tough times right now", the coach added.

Griffen has played all nine of his seasons with the Vikings and signed a four-year extension last year.
