The surf resort has closed pending the test results from the CDC, he said.
The infection triggered by the amoeba has only been diagnosed 143 times in the United States during the past 55 years and has a 98 percent fatality rate, the CDC said. However, such as in the case of Stabile, Naegleria fowleri can be contracted when contaminated water enters the body through the nose, either in a chlorinated swimming pool water or if one uses contaminated tap water to rinse their sinuses.
Once he returned home to New Jersey, Stabile complained of a severe headache on September 16, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up to spread awareness about N. fowleri.
Naegleria fowleri can not be contracted by swallowing contaminated water, according to the CDC. His mother called 911 and he was rushed to Atlantic City Medical Center.
She said she didn't know when Stabile was at the park. "Even so, this drug is not easily accessible", Stabile's friend wrote.
Stabile, whose family said he was an avid outdoorsman who loved to surf, had been at the park on vacation.
The White House keeps editing its transcripts in curious ways
He declined to give details about which senators he meant, saying that he would save it for his book, "like everyone else does". Despite the his impatience, Trump did later circle back to the reporters, including Vega, to field Kavanaugh questions.
Stabile's family have launched a GoFundMe for the Fabrizio Stabile Foundation for Naegleria Fowleri Awareness, in hopes of educating more people about the infection.
The CDC says Naegleria fowleri is commonly found in warm freshwater and soil.
The disease, according to the CDC, is nearly always fatal, with only four people out of 143 cases have survived the infection. From the nose, it can travel to the brain and cause primary amebic meningoencephalitis, or PAM, the CDC noted. PAM is hard to detect because the disease progresses rapidly, so diagnosis is usually made after death, the CDC said.
Doctors first thought he was suffering from meningitis, but tests revealed he had Naegleria fowleri the day before his death, when it was too late to treat the infection.
It is now closed as health officials carry out testing.
Ten days later, Naegleria fowleri was also detected in a Louisiana water system near Shreveport on September 26, according to KTBS.
