Trump mocks Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's testimony at MS rally

03 October 2018, 05:04 | Max Haynes

President Donald Trump ignited a crowd at a campaign rally in MS by mocking a woman who has claimed she was sexually assaulted by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh decades ago.

Speaking at a campaign rally Tuesday night, Trump cast doubt on Ford's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee by mocking her for not knowing the answers to questions such as how she had gotten to the high school party where she says Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her, an allegation he has repeatedly denied. Kavanaugh angrily denied the charges hours later and accused Democrats of orchestrating a "political hit" against him. "I don't know, but I had one beer, that's the only thing I remember". I don't remember. Where was the place? And I think the country needs to be behind it and we need a more bipartisan process.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh testifies during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on his nomination be an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, U.S., September 27, 2018. Alaska Natives haveflooded the senator's office with calls and letters about their fears about Kavanaugh's past rulings on the environment, climate change and voting rights, as well as a case the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear this year about whether the state or federal government gets to set rules for subsistence fishing by indigenous people.

Trump, in a riff that has been dreaded by White House and Senate aides, attacked the story of Christine Blasey Ford at length - drawing laughs from the crowd.

Trump made the remarks at a freewheeling rally that comes as the FBI investigates allegations that the embattled Supreme Court nominee sexually assaulted female students while in high school and college.

"Is it any wonder that she was terrified to come forward, and that other sexual assault survivors are as well?" She is remarkable profile in courage. "He is a profile in cowardice", Bromwich said.

Trump and Senate Republicans have instructed the FBI to investigate it and any other "credible allegations" against him, but the president also said "speed" was important in the process. "I respect her position very much", Trump said to reporters on Monday.

Flake said that he is pushing the White House for "a fulsome investigation" of the allegations against Kavanaugh. They want a summary of the report made public.

Trump raised the temperature even further at a rally in MS on Tuesday night, mocking Ford for not having answers to some questions during her Senate testimony.

Trump, who was himself accused during the 2016 presidential race of sexual misconduct with numerous women, tried to link the allegations against Kavanaugh to what he said was a broader problem.

The White House rebutted these claims with statements from two former Yale classmates of Judge Kavanaugh.

"It's hard to believe what Judge Kavanaugh swore under oath", Schumer said. He said Kavanaugh seemed willing to "mislead senators about everything from the momentous to the mundane" to ensure his ascension to the high court. "The floodgates of mud and muck opened entirely on Brett Kavanaugh and his family".

"I believe Judge Kavanaugh will be confirmed to the Supreme Court very soon". "This has become a national embarrassment". "You can be an exemplary person for 35 years and then somebody comes along, and they say you did this or that, and they give three witnesses, and the three witnesses at this point do not corroborate what she's saying".

With the midterm elections just weeks away, Republicans risk losing the House and possibly the Senate as they face an energized Democratic party - particularly educated, suburban women and minorities - and a wave of GOP retirements, as well as the president's sagging approval ratings and the tide of controversy around his White House.

Concerns: Murkowski has been closely guarded about her opinions on Kavanaugh, but as one of the few Republican senators who supports abortion rights, how the judge might rule on abortion access and the future of the Affordable Care Act have been key issues for her.
