GoFundMe campaigns launch for victims of limo crash that killed 20
09 October 2018, 10:41 | Darnell Patrick
Emergency personnel respond to the scene of a deadly crash Saturday in Schoharie N.Y
The limo's passengers were all headed to celebrate a birthday party at a brewery in Cooperstown, according to a relative who spoke to the New York Times.
He declined to discuss the limo's origin and destination. Instead, it would smash into an unoccupied SUV after running a stop sign, killing two people standing outside, before careening into a ravine. An older vehicle like the 2001 Excursion stretch limo did not have side-impact or curtain airbags from the factory, so you can bet there were no airbags for any of the passengers in this horrific crash, either. We thank all of the first responders who have assisted, those who have reached out with kindness and love and those who continue to support us as we mourn those we lost.
"We're just talking layers of tragedy".
The Steenburgs weren't the only newlywed couple in the vehicle; their friends Erin and Shane McGowan had only been married four months.
Schoharie Town Supervisor Alan Tavenner told the Times Union of Albany that transportation officials attempted to make the intersection safer about seven years ago.
Erin, 34, and Shane, 30, were married in June in upstate NY. According to their wedding page on The Knot, they had meet in the summer of 2015 at a local bar and were soon "spending every moment of their free time together".
The NTSB, the New York State Police and the New York State Department of Transportation are all investigating the crash.
"They did the responsible thing getting a limo so they wouldn't have to drive anywhere", their aunt, Barbara Douglas, told reporters on Sunday (Monday NZT).
"They were lovely girls, full of life". Jackson was a special education teacher in Amsterdam, said Santabarbara, who represents the part of NY where the crash happened.
Mary was another of Amy's sisters. Star Spangled Crossfit, where she worked, took to Facebook to share their grief Sunday.
The close nature of those killedSaturday can be seen in the comments of Amy Steenburg's post from last week, specifically in a comment about the couch.
"They were the Four Musketeers", their brother Tom King, 35, told The Post, while outside his parent's home in Amsterdam, New York.
The King family hopes to hold one funeral at St. Stanislaus Church for all four daughters and three sons-in-law, a family member told CBS2.
Erin and Shane McGowan - who also married in June - died, too, in Saturday's collision, say relatives.
"My whole entire family is in complete and utter shock".
"Amanda was loved by all of her coworkers", said Steve Klein, associate executive director of program services at the company. "They had big plans".
"There wasn't anything they could do there", he said.
Rocco Semprivivo, Erin McGowan's stepfather, described his stepdaughter to The Times as "a pretty outgoing, gregarious girl". Their godfather, Patrick Cushing, also was killed.
Cushing's brother, Justin Cushing, described him in an interview with CNN as kind and empathetic.
"My family is just going through a lot", Mrs Abeling said.
Cushing worked in the New York State Senate's Technology Service unit and played for the US Dodgeball team, which described him on Facebook as an awesome friend and "one of the most agile and dominant players in the world".
Amanda, 26, a waitress at a retirement community, was "a very strong and independent person" who didn't like people to do things for her, according to her sister. "He will be greatly missed by his Senate family".
Douglas said three of the sisters were with their husbands. She worked for seven years for Living Resources, a NY nonprofit that works with people who have disabilities, serving as assistant director of the organization's day community opportunities program. "You felt a certain friendliness from her".
Sumwalt said NTSB investigators will look at the company's compliance with state and federal regulations, it's safety culture, records of previous crashes and management of its drivers, among other factors.
