ESPN reported that the trade progressed to the point where the Wolves shared Butler's medical information with the Heat and the owners for each team were consulted until the Wolves made 11th hour demands and the talks broke down.

A Wolves-Heat blockbuster trade fell apart over the weekend, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski.

Minnesota owner Glen Taylor and Miami owner Micky Arison had become involved in the talks and there was hope that a trade call with the league office could finalize a deal soon, until Minnesota moved to amend the framework of the trade and talks collapsed Saturday, league sources said. Sometime between now and then, Minnesota raised their asking price, and Miami Heat was seemingly put off because they'd already consented to add the versatile two-way guard Josh Richardson as a sweetener in the deal.

He is entering the fourth season of a five-year, $92.3 million contract he signed with Chicago in 2015, but he can enter the free agent market next summer by opting out of the final year.

Previous reports indicated the Timberwolves' preference that several of the Heat's blue-chip assets be included in a Butler trade - namely, Bam Adebayo, Josh Richardson, and a 2019 first-round pick.

In July, Butler reportedly turned down Minnesota's four-year extension offer worth $110 million.

Every trade in every sports league is influenced heavily by leverage, and the current Jimmy Butler trade talks going on in the National Basketball Association right now are no exception.

Butler has been away from the team since being given permission to skip media day and has been rehabbing from offseason surgery on his right hand. The Heat stand among Butler's preference landing destinations.
