On Tuesday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres thanked Haley for her "excellent cooperation and support", his spokesperson told Reuters.

At the U.N., Haley helped spearhead the Trump administration's efforts to combat what it alleged to be anti-American and anti-Israel actions by the worldwide body. He also said the pair had "solved a lot of problems". Among the names being floated in the media as a possible successor: Ivanka Trump.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would consider selecting Goldman Sachs executive and former White House adviser Dina Powell as the next USA ambassador to the United Nations, and he shot down speculation he would tap his daughter Ivanka for the post.

Trump nominated Haley to the United Nations job in November 2016.

Donald Trump has accepted Nikki Haley's resignation as the USA ambassador to the United Nations.

She was previously governor of SC - the first woman to hold the post.

"I don't agree with the president on everything".

"I don't have anything set on where I'm going to go", Haley said, adding that "it has been the honor of a lifetime" to serve as United Nations ambassador. I mean, to redo the NAFTA deal the way he did; what I've done working with him on the Middle East Peace Plan, it's so unbelievably well done.

When asked about her reasons for resigning from her position, Haley said it's important for government officials to recognize when it is the right time to step aside.

Before being chosen as Trump's ambassador, Haley, 46, served as governor of the state of SC - the first woman to hold the post.

"No I'm not running", she said emphatically.

Governor: Limo that crashed, killing 20, shouldn't have been on the road
Authorities are still notifying the families of victims and declined to release the victims' names, according to Fiore. In fact, all three of Prestige Limousine's vehicles had violations when they were inspected last month , records show.

Haley's tenure as USA ambassador hasn't been without controversy.

"It's been eight years of intense time, and I'm a believer in term limits".

In a joint appearance at the Oval Office, Donald Trump described Ms Haley as a "very special" person - adding that she had hinted six months ago she was considering taking time off.

US President's daughter Ivanka Trump (L) and her husband Senior White House Adviser Jared Kushner are seen during the opening of the US Embassy, in Jerusalem, on May 14, 2018.

In a tweet, the president teased a "big announcement" Tuesday morning and referred to Haley as his "friend". "But I will tell you that there is no hate in this country".

The role required her to represent the USA and protect the country's interests at meetings of the UN Security Council.

"Anyone that goes and tries to spew hate on someone because of their color or religion or their place in life - that's terribly wrong", she continued.

The complaint noted she accepted flights from three separate businessmen from her home state of SC on luxury aircraft between the state and Washington, D.C. She was accompanied by her husband on the flights.

There is no evidence, however, that the scrutiny of those flights had anything to do with Haley's decision to leave her diplomatic post.

Congressman Mark Sanford, (R), raised that story with MSNBC shortly after Haley's resignation.
